In 1993, SAAB Group (Datasaab/Saab Automobile/Saab) experimented with fly-by-wheel technology as part of the pan-Usean aircraft developmental programme "Prometheus" (PROgramME for extreme Trials with Highest Efficiency and Unimpressive Safety). Their contribution to the programme consisted of a modified Saab JAS 39 Gripen NG with the flightstick replaced with a centre-mounted steering wheel. This setup increased the risk of body and facial injury in the event of an accident, but it was countered by providing easy and cheap airbag installations, as well as decreasing instrument panel visibility, Which in turn increased the amount of accidents. This prototype was tested in an episode of Top Stick; the segment was revisited in Series 18, Episode 5 of the current Top Stick series, where Top Stick paid tribute to the craft.
