The Sunday Islands is a republic located on two small islands at 70° South and 105° East.
The Sunday Islands are comprised of two main islands, located at 70° South and 105° East in the South Atlantic ocean. The nearest land would be the Antarctic coast, followed by the Aurelian East Coast. However, both are 5-6 hours away by air, making the Sunday Islands one of, if not the most remote population on the planet. Both islands are 72km long, and 64km wide.
Due to the shape of the islands, it has sometimes been likened to the shape of a semi-colon. This is due to the fact that both islands are almost round, except for a peninsula on the east coast of the north island, Beidao.
The islands offer very many stark scenic views, both in the winter and the summer.
Both islands are mountainous. Beidao has a range running down the middle of the island, and is dominated by four peaks with a river between. The south island, Nandao, has a single peak in the middle. This peak is an inactive volcano and tops out at 4,52 km ASL.
The Islands support unusually large amouts of vegetation (owing to the similarly unusual humidity on the islands). More trees and grass can be found on Beidao, while shorter grass and moss is found on Nandao.
In the summer months, December to March, the temperatures level off at 18°C. In the winter, June to September, temperatures dip to -34°C. The sun is also visible for longer than 24 hours in the summer, while there are two months of continuous night in the winter.
The Sunday Islands also display large amounts of precipitation year round, with most days being overcast and breezy. It is this docile, yet ominous weather that gives the islands its name.
The Sunday Islands were first colonized by south Veruseans, namely Yuktobania, sometime in the 13th century. The colonists were left alone for 600 years. During this time, much folklore was generated by the colonists about taming the mythical beasts that lived there. However, the colonists did find enough to live off of, and found ways to ride out the winter's cold.
In the middle 19th century, A second set of colonists from South Verusea and South Usea came to the islands. This incoming population seeked pilgrimage, and mingled quite well with the pre-existing population. The new wave, having a good maritime experience base, also boosted the country's connections to the outside world. Ports were built, and trade was secured with the Aurelian Empire, the Osean Empire, Verusea, and Usea. It was this economy boost that led to the country's high development.
The goverment system on the Islands is very decentralized, but hierarchical.
Settlements such as cities or villages have their own government. The cities are grouped into counties with their own government. The counties are then further grouped into their separate island governments. The national government consists of the counties' individual representatives, as well as the two island governors. Both share the highest seat of authority.
The economy is mainly focused on exporting goods earned from fishing, technology, and engineering. Fisheries are the main source of business. Scientific materials and new technology are designed, tested, and assembled in the Sunday Islands. Research is also done in the major cities.
Tourism is also a rapidly growing industry.
Owing to the isolation of the country, the Sundish military is small, strictly self defense, and divided into three branches. The Army is equipped to handle evacuations of citizens and to set perimeters. The Air Force comprises of two fighter squadrons, two bomber squadrons, and two helicopter squadrons. The Navy enlists two destroyers and three battleships.
In the unlikely event of an invasion, the country only has enough military power to keep its capital (and the citizens evacuated there) afloat. Since the country also has very good relations with Aurelia, it relies on the Aurelian Armed Forces for most of its self defense.
The culture in the Sunday Islands is an example of interplay between folk culture and popular culture, as well as a blend of Yuktobanian and Usean/Verusean culture. In smaller settlements, houses are typically small. Houses on Beidao are typically wooden, one-story homes, while homes on Nandao are built with more steel, and are multi-level homes with one room per level. The cities are teeming with life, and festivals are based off of ancient folklore or the solar cycle. The nation also tends to keep to itself.
The Sunday Islands boasts one of the highest development rates of all the nations in the world.
Schooling in the Sunday Islands is mandatory until after 12th grade. College education is cheaper than an education in Osea or Yuktobania.
The Sunday Islands also excels in the field of scientific research.
The HuoShan Observatory on the Nandao is one of the best places for astronomy in the Southern Hemisphere, owing to the year round calm at the top of the mountain. The Sundish Space Program is also funded by the government. Modules and spacecraft are designed and assembled in the Sunday Islands, but are launched from Aurelia or Verusea (since there is no launch facility on either island).
The Sunday Islands were also one of the pioneers of Antarctic exploration. The Antarctic Exploration Program keeps a research station at the Antarctic coast directly to the south of the country, and the air force base-coast reasearch station is also one of the very few routes to enter Antarctica.
- The Sundish Air Force was useful when Air Ixiom Flight 12 went missing. The flight, from Comberth Harbor to Griswall, disappeared while still on course. Rumors of terrorism surfaced. The Sundish Air Force, knowing that they were the last country the flight would see before the Aurelian capital, intercepted the flight and forced it to land.
- The nation's real life counterpart would be Japan/Korea (culturally, demographically), China (economic success), Russia (demographically), and Norway/Scotland (geographically).
- The isolation of the country means that it is the host of the only radio station, airport, navigation aid, weather station, light house, cell service tower, internet provider or civilization for almost 700km all around.
